  1. T. aestivum originated from the hybridization between T. turgidum and Ae. tauschii, followed by genome duplication. T. turgidum evolved from T. dicoccoides that was formed in the intercrossing between T. urartu and Ae. speltoides (closely relates to the B genome). T. monococcum was one representative of the A genome as well. The other four species of Sitopsis were used as relatives to Ae. speltoides; SHW = synthetic hexaploid wheat; aegilopoides = T. monococcum ssp. aegilopoides; monococcum = T. monococcum ssp. monococcum.
