Representation of open, closed, and neutral chromatin is shown for structural elements of genes that differ in their expression status and promoter chromatin configuration (A). (B), RNAseq reads per kilobase pair of gene per million (RPKM) are shown as surrogate expression levels for silent and active genes with open or closed promoters. (C), expression breadth metric tau[20] of testis-biased genes from gene clusters embedded in open versus closed chromatin domains. Note that if tau value is higher, the expression breadth is lower and thus tissue-specificity of gene expression is increased.
